Beatles could refer to the band itself, which is singular or to the four individuals who made up the band (plural). I'm not exactly sure what the protocol would be for other bands, but for this band at least, John, Paul, George and Ringo ARE the Beatles. (As opposed to other bands whose members may come and go, and the band is known mainly for "the band" rather than the individuals involved.) For that reason, common usage seems to dictate that "The Beatles ARE the best."
