What is it that makes teenage girls/young women scream at their idols?

I was reading Ilie Nastase’s autobiography and it occurred to me when he mentioned teenage girls screaming when he walked around tennis tournaments that you never see teenage males screaming at sportswomen, female singers and actresses who could be perceived as idols.

Historically – especially with bands like The Beatles, The Stones; various male sports stars and actors – why do women react the way they do with impassioned screams etc?

I don’t know the exact reasons for it, but it is definitely pack mentality. Just the same as shouting and cheering.

For instance, imagine you are at a grand slam final between Nadal/Federer BUT it’s a private game with just you as the only spectator. Would you feel quite so determined to shout ‘allez Roger’ if you were sat there on your tod? Actually, you probably would complete with Toblerone hat and cow bell, however, it’s normally a reaction to excitement and stress, letting the opponents/popstars know you care just as much as all the others shouting/screaming.

It’s like laughing at the telly, we laugh very differently and far more animatedly when in company. Humans mirror behaviour all the time..you will do it on the tube without even noticing it.

I guess screaming teenage girls specifically maybe a tension release, a way to vent what are very strong emotions even if it is a mere crush. No different really to what goes on in a football crowd..making up chants, screaming, swearing and generally being fanatical.

It probably all goes back to long gone gender attraction roles ie males now looking for pursuits to dump excess testosterone instead of hunting and women trying to attract the attention of a mate that will ensure her safety.

I’m ashamed to say I remember my Mum and her sisters behaving ridiculous when Nastase was playing, it was all pretty good natured as they were in our living room and he was on the telly. If he had been in the room I’m sure it would have got very nasty never mind screaming :)

Edit- another point I forgot – teenage girls and their celebrity crushes are a far more an emotional experience than it is for boys. Girls use all this as practice for the relationships they will have in time. Boys however it tends to be more ..er..physical with no emotional attachment. A boy may have endless posters the same as a girl, but the girl will know every single thing about her ‘target’ you only have to see the endless ‘what’s your favourite biscuit’ in teen magazines aimed at girls. Hence, if you are a teenage girl in a crowd and you see what you believe to be the love of your life..someone screams and catches his attention, an "I love him more" competition starts and before you know it they are sobbing and getting generally overwrought.

They scream to alert people of danger.

As for celebrities, they scream at them for the fun of it.

Older women do it too. Ever watched Oprah? It’s because women are immature with these kinds of things.

Because we can and it’s free.

    …unless it’s Justin Bieber. Then you’ve got a problem.

Anyways, going with the general style of argument in this question, men are too immature to know how to have a good time.

I think it’s something to do with being in a crowd and copying people around them and getting caught up in the excitement of seeing someone famous. Your idols do tend to keep you waiting before they come on stage which just adds to the build up/atmosphere. I think screaming could be a way of trying to get your idol to look your way. I know if I go to the theatre, I listen when to start/stop clapping as I wouldn’t want to be the only one clapping so probably a similar crowd behaviour. I’ve heard men shouting, stamping and whistling in crowds so I don’t think it’s just a girl thing.

Men make "cat-calls" at women that they find attractive. Same thing. Trying to get attention.

No clue. I’ve witnessed girls do some embarrassing, crazy shiz…particularly when the Jonas Brothers were present. My ears hurt remembering it. If you want the guy to take you seriously, screaming at him is just about the least effective way of going about that.

The only time I’ve ever "shouted" at a male star was during concerts, but that was more about cheering for the performance than freaking out because he was hot and I wanted his body. Men shout in crowds too.

Not many men hold sportswomen, actresses, and female singers as "idols" to be fair, though…if anything, more girls hold female stars as idols.

unless someone has beaten me to it – it’s quite obviously the star’s outstanding personality, sensitivity, good looks, and deep intellectual thinking.

    i find it amusing.

if i was so attracted and enthralled by a female celebrity i would (even when i was a teen, mind you) would actually be silent and cehck her out all i can if she came in front of me. i wouldnt bother cheering or screaming because men are realistic and know there are a 1000 other guys just like me present wiling to do anything for her….so why bother.

women on the other hand, probably feel they are entitled or something to a male celebritys attention. maybe they are right.

I have NOT a clue! I have never done it myself except for at college football games. Why not scream and yell with all the other crazy men and women?? I have been to a good amount of concerts and nothing has ever come upon me to yell at the "Idol". I am pretty conservative anyways so I don’t like to act out in public.
