The Beatles are better than Elvis!!!?

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

There is no doubt that the King and the Fab Four were extremely popular and influential musical acts of the 20th century, and remain icons of “the good old days” to countless fans. Although both the Beatles and Elvis Presley have made their mark on popular culture forever, there tends to be bias towards one or another.
I would like to begin by stating that the Beatles were the most popular music group ever! My opinion is shared by thousands of people in the world as well as Rolling Stone magazine, who placed the Beatles #1 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Credited as pioneers in terms of concept albums, music videos, feedback, experimental mixing, and backwards messages, the Beatles are remembered for not only their exceptional musical contributions, but also their wit, charisma, and humor. It has been 37 years since they broke up, yet their CDs and merchandise is selling as much as, if not more than current bands. And the reason for this?
Talent. The Beatles were amazing musicians and remain unmatched to this day. Their impact on the world has sustained for decades and will be remembered far into the future. It is amazing to think that a group of four working-class Liverpudians would ever rise to the status that they eventually did, raising musical standards as they went.
Then there’s Elvis. The overrated “King.” I don’t understand what is so great about him. Say what you want, I will always think of him as a fat guy eating hamburgers in a sequined suit. In my opinion, Elvis Presley as a musician is a complete joke- he was famous for the sake of being famous, not because of any skill.
The hype associated with Elvis is only because he was a pioneer. Yet compared to his other acts of the time such as Chuck Berry and Little Richard, Elvis falls short of in terms of skill.
My problem with Elvis is that he didn’t write his own songs (talk about lazy and uncreative!), he hardly play the guitar, could barely sing, and he couldn’t act! I know that last bit may not be of importance but since he has like 20 boring and forgettable movies, you would think he could at least try.
On the other hand, the Beatles wrote the vast majority of their songs which are almost all good. They also span a wide range of musical genres and musical techniques. And, get this. The Beatles could act, and made 5 wonderful unique movies.
Elvis Presley wanted the Beatles to be kicked out of the United States because he believed that their anti-war attitude was “un-American.” Haha, ain’t that a laugh! Here’s this guy who loves the United States yet doesn’t allow opinions to be expressed! If you ask me, the real reason he wanted them out of the country is because they posed a threat to him.
I admit Elvis became a legend. Yet I think he was just a performer. Not a musician. Not a songwriter. Definitely overrated. Compared to the Beatles, Elvis was more average than the color gray.

to make a few points, elvis did indeed not play much guitar. not because he couldn’t but because it freed him up to move around and dance more, a talent the beatles lack (nothing against the beatles).

second is his voice. in every technical category, his voice was phenomenal. he had pure tone that was in pitch, power, a wide range and he emoted well in his voice.

third, i don’t know what movies you are watching, but the beatles’ movies and elvis’ movies are equivalent. mediocre acting at best, and made to promote the music. elvis was also very witty, he cracked jokes in shows and had fun with the audience.

it also deserves noting that you credit the beatles with some major studio innovation. much of what they did was directly inspired by someone else, brian wilson of the beach boys. i would venture to say that brian is the greatest studio innovator of all time. and paul mccartney has stated that "pets sounds" is the greatest album. while they created some new sounds, in a sense they were followers of someone else’s innovations.

finally a quote from your beloved john lennon himself says it best: "before elvis, there was nothing."

Disney to remake the Beatles 1968 movie "Yellow Submarine"…?

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Your thoughts?

Heres the article…

Disney and director Robert Zemeckis are negotiating to remake “Yellow Submarine,” the 1968 psychedelic animated film based on the music of The Beatles.

The studio has been quietly brokering a complicated rights deal that would give Zemeckis access to 16 original Beatles songs for a movie he will direct in the performance-capture 3-D digital production format he employed for “A Christmas Carol.” Disney opens that film November 6, with Jim Carrey playing Scrooge as well as the three ghosts who haunt him in the Charles Dickens tale.

The hope is to have "Yellow Submarine" ready to premiere around the 2012 Summer Olympics, which begins July 27 in London.

Disney would not comment on the negotiations or the project. Zemeckis’s ImageMovers would produce.

The deal marries cutting-edge 3-D feature technology with a surging reinterest in The Beatles, who appeared only in the film’s closing scene. Actors provided the voices for the animated characters of Beatles Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

The storyline of the original took place in Pepperland, an undersea paradise protected by Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. When the band is captured by the music-hating Blue Meanies, a soldier is sent to Liverpool to fetch the Fab Four, who hop in the submarine and save the day.

Key to the deal is Zemeckis’ ability to use a treasure trove of classic Beatles tunes, from the title song to “All Together Now,” “Baby You’re a Rich Man,” “All You Need Is Love,” “When I’m 64,” “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.”

The deal has been months in the making with armies of lawyers and sources said that rights will encompass the future prospects of a Broadway stage musical — much as Disney accomplished with “The Lion King,” a Cirque du Soleil stage production (“Love,” a production based on Beatles tunes, has been running for two years at The Mirage) and merchandise.

“Yellow Submarine” is just the latest in a flurry of pacts for The Beatles. September will be a big month for the band that broke up in 1970, with the release of a flurry of remastered records and the vidgame “The Beatles: Rock Band.”

Disney’s talks follow the astounding $60 million deal that Sony made to turn the rehearsal footage for the final Michael Jackson concerts into a feature film.

Why are films and games like "Rock Band" successful in reaching into decades-old bands for songs that can be sold to young audiences? My personal musical tastes are stamped from the 1970s to the mid-1980s, but I would argue that there is very little contemporary competition for the classic acts of yesterday. Is there another Beatles, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen or U2 on the horizon?

(So far there is no mention of the Jonas Brothers)

I can tell this is gonna be bad.
First of all, it’s from Disney. I just hope they won’t let some stupid so-called talented Jonas bros or Zac Efron or Miley Cyrus ruin it.

Second, why don’t they just re-release it instead of making some 3-D remake. Originality is always the best. Most remakes are pretty bad.

This film was really awesome and way ahead of it’s time, a pure classic.

By making a remake, it has less chance of todays younger generation of seeing the original.

C’mon Disney, what have you let yourselves into?

The Beatles v The Monkees sales?

Monday, November 9th, 2009

A friend of mine believes that The Monkees outsold the Beatles globally in terms of albums, movies and merchandise for the period that they were both on the scene together (so I guess this means 1965 – 1970-ish). I am sure that the Beatles massively outsold The Monkees in this period.

Can anyone show me the figures made for each area by each band to decide, and please specifically cite your sources?

Thanks.

Andy

The Monkees probably out sold the Beatles for a small amount of time. Here is a blurb from wikipedia.

The Monkees outsold the Beatles and the Rolling Stones combined in 1967.
