Do people think the Beatles songs performed by Ringo Starr were criticised too much?

I have read in one book about the Beatles’ songs that Ringo’s songs were "doleful" and were "slotted in almost as light relief". I think the writer was being quite unfair, I wouldn’t have thought the songs Ringo sang would have simply been considered "light relief". Some of the songs he sang, such as "What Goes On" were quite good, weren’t they?

Id like to be
under the sea
In an Octopuses garden
In the shade!!!!……There was a child-like quality to his songs…I think he wrote this one

Ringo didn’t have the best of singing voices lets face it, and yes I think there was an element of "lets give Ringo a turn" some of the material wasn’t that good but then there are songs like The Yellow Submarine and in my humble opinion!! that is one of the most loved Beatle songs.

Sorry but the only beatles I like are the ones I chase around outside and hopefully snack on later. I really don’t care for their music and think they are the most overrated pop group of all time. Now that I’ve incurred the wrath of Beatle maniacs, I’m gonna find my favorite hiding spot and catch a few winks.

people sometimes write books just to boost their own egos, in truth i never heard any true beatles fan criticise dear ringo ever and i certainly always had a soft spot for our richard.

Ringo Sung "A Little Help from my friends" which is one of the best beatles songs. Its a shame he wrote such rubbish like Octopus’ Garden.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney, two of the world’s greatest songwriters and performers, thought his performances were good enough to include on Beatles albums. NUFF SAID.

Didnt exactly say it was a classic lovey, just loved….even if not approved by such an expert as yourself.

yellow submarine does not exactly stand out as a classic, octopus garden is also mind numbingly bad ! in fact the only ringo song i enjoy while he was a beatle is Goodnight at the end of the double white album, as a solo singer Photograph stands out as his best single, ringo really was a very lucky guy to follow fate as he did !

Ringo’s overall contribution to The Beatles is generally underated and misunderstood. He was the first true ‘rock’ drummer and completely changed the way that drummers played in pop music. With regard to his singing – check out ‘Boys’ on their first album – hardly ‘light relief’.
