Beatles Lyrics question?

For the song "If I fell" by the Beatles, I just checked out the lyrics. So I read them and I was wondering why the (male) singer keeps reffering to a "her". I thought about that and I guess the "she" is his old girlfriend, and not the girlfriend of the woman he fell in love with which is what was my first thought.
Was I right the first or second time?

I thought ‘her’ was an old GF, but not positive,….!!
