I agree with George … I agree with George that “Free as a Bird” sounds like the Beatles now (circa 1994). George’s slide guitar sound really hadn’t appeared on a Beatle record. There was a hint of it in the guitar solo on “Something.” Of course, what would become George’s signature sound would explode onto the scene with “My Sweet Lord” (in 1971). So, to me, the guitar work on “Free as a Bird” sounds like George post-Beatles.
Seeing the three of … Seeing the three of them try to work without john and then, in their own way kinda say, “it sucks without john” is really sad. It’s like watching a 3 legged puppy try to hobble off. Especially with Real Love playing in the background. It’s enough to make someone tear up.
I enjoy Free As A … I enjoy Free As A Bird a bit more, and the ‘freshness’ they describe really does enter into each version. I can’t help but hear that ELO (Jeff Lynne) crap that immediately makes me feel, ‘it’s not really them’. Similar to Harrison’s fairly successfuly Album in the late 80s. That synthesizer/echo junk really stands out like a a wart on a beautiful face. You wonder how Petty was able to mostly avoid that stuff on his solo album.
